Biography
Jabier Mendizabal graduated in Biomedical Engineering from Mondragon University in June 2020, where he also completed a master’s degree in biomedical technologies (2021). Between 2021 and 2023, during his professional experience in the private sector, he gained expertise in various advanced manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing, electrospinning, and melt electrowriting, applied to the development of biomedical materials.
In March 2024, he joined the `Materials + Technologies´ research group in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) as a research staff member, working on the development and characterization of graphene-loaded alginate-based bioinks aimed at improving their electrical properties and applicability in 3D bioprinting.
In May 2025, he was awarded a fellowship from the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa focused on the extraction of alginate from seaweed harvested along the Basque coastline. Since September 2025, he has been pursuing his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Dr. Kizkitza González and Dr. Raquel Fernández.
Research
Currently, Jabier Mendizabal is pursuing his doctoral thesis titled “Development of functional alginate-based inks for advanced applications in biomedicine and energy.” His research focuses on the development of printable materials incorporating graphene, photoactive compounds such as azobenzenes, and drugs like cortisone. His work addresses controlled drug release, conductive inks, and energy storage, aiming to create multifunctional systems with potential applications in biomedicine and advanced energy technologies. He has participated in two research projects and presented his work at two conferences.
