To coincide with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 11 February, the Clara Campoamor Civic Centre in Barakaldo (Bizkaia) invited us to deliver a talk and workshop on RFID technology.

Amaia Arrinda, Iñaki Eizmendi and Teresa Echevarría participated in the event.

During the talk, we explained the basic principles of near-field communication, with a specific focus on the use of RFID tags in our daily lives. 
The workshop involved creating an RFID tag and taking a quiz on the topics covered.

The talk was entitled 'We use them every day, but do you know what RFID tags are?'

The event is held in more than 370 cities on the continent and is funded by the European Commission under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) -an initiative to promote scientific careers in Europe-, which is part of Horizon Europe, the European Union's Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.

Jon Montalbán attended the IBC Convention Amsterdam (The Netherlands). 13-15 September 2025. 

It is an annual trade show, held in September at the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. IBC's tagline is "By the industry. For the industry." and it is aimed at broadcasters, content creators/providers, equipment manufacturers, professional and technical associations, and other participants in the broadcasting, entertainment and technology industry. In addition to being a trade show showcasing a hundred of exhibitors there is an IBC conference, panel discussions, demos, technical paper presentations and speaker sessions to attend. IBC is an independent body, owned by six partner bodies: IABM, IEEE, IET, RTS, SCTE and SMPTE, with a full-time professional staff.

The objective of the measurement campaign is to evaluate the conducted emissions and the changes in the grid impedance generated by different Electric Vehicle Charching Systems (EVCS).

They are part of the EURAMET Met4EVCS project (https://www.vsl.nl/en/met4evcs/, Grant Agreement: 23IND06), and they will be conducted in collaboration with RISE (https://www.ri.se/en).

Two measurement systems developed by TSR team, specifically developed for the requirements of this type of on-site measurements, will be used for real-time results and acquisition of data for laboratory post-processing.

  • Xabier Zubiaur, the CEO of Itelazpi, presented an award in which four other benchmark companies participated.
  • The winning project involves developing a deployment model for edge applications in 5G networks.

 

On the morning of 17 June, the annual Business Awards organised by the Bilbao School of Engineering of the UPV/EHU were held. The awards recognise the best Bachelor's Thesis or Master's Thesis of the 2024-2025 academic year. Itelazpi, alongside four other companies (the Repsol Foundation, ITP Aero, Management Solutions and TradeWind Tankers), presented the award for the best Master's thesis in Telecommunications Technology Engineering. Xabier Zubiaur, the public company's CEO, presented the award to Iker Costa Fernández de Luco, the student who won it. In his speech, Zubiaur praised the quality of the winning work and the other projects submitted, as well as the students' academic achievements. He also wanted to acknowledge the valuable guidance provided by the tutors, emphasising the importance of this initiative in recognising talent and promoting STEM careers.

Award-winning TFM: edge applications in 5G environments

Itelazpi recognised this work with the first prize, which aims to develop a model that enables the deployment of Edge applications in 5G networks. This functionality is essential for use cases requiring very low latency. Edge applications bring the connected application closer to the user or end device, drastically improving latency and the user experience.

Collaboration agreement and commitment to society

Itelazpi's participation in the Bilbao School of Engineering Business Awards forms part of the collaboration agreement that has united the two organisations for almost two decades. The agreement enables students to undertake internships at Itelazpi, visit facilities in the network of issuing centres, and conduct research. Collaboration with educational centres is one of Itelazpi's key areas of activity in terms of its commitment to society.

The Elhuyar Science Fair is an event organized by Elhuyar Fundazioa.

The Fair showcases projects developed by young people, allowing them to experience research and development firsthand. The Elhuyar Science Fair aims to provide STEAM experiences for young people with the involvement of the entire community.

It is a network of project fairs for young people between 12 and 18 years old. The fair is primarily for young people from the Basque Country, but groups are also invited from other science fairs abroad.

The fair in Bilbao is the final and most important one. It is open to students and non-students who have participated in other fairs. 

The TSR Lab has participated for many years since the 2016 edition. 

The 2025 edition is being held in Paseo del Arenal (Bilbao) in 28-31 May 2025.

Elizabet de Armas, Jorch Mendoza and Teresa Echevarría attended the event: Género y Comunicación de la Ciencia 2025 (Gender and Science Communication).

The event is organised by the UPV/EHU's Scientific Culture Chair and supported by the Basque Government, Iberdrola and EITB.

Although  the event is primarily aimed at communication professionals, it is also open to people from all fields of knowledge who are interested in inclusive communication and how to approach it.

This horizontal conference enables even the most prominent speakers to participate, learn, and discover new ideas and tools to enhance their communication.

This was the third edition of the event, which took place on 15 May 2025 at the Iberdrola Tower in Bilbao.

CFAA: Centro de Fabricación Avanzada Aeronáutica (Aeronautics Advanced Manufacturing Center) 

The Aeronautics Advanced Manufacturing Center (CFAA) was created as a new model of relationship between different research levels and nowadays industry applications. This center was promoted and funded by the Department of Economy development and Infrastructure of the Basque Country Government, Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the launching was supported by the frame of the Technological and Scientific Park of Bizkaia. This Center is built as a mixed research center within the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and a consortium of companies, the aim is to work towards final applications and to generate new know-how in advanced manufacturing technologies.

Undergraduate students in Telecommunications Technology Engineering from the Bilbao School of Engineering in  visited Itelazpi's DTT and FM broadcasting centre in Oiz. 8 November 2024.

For more than 10 years, Itelazpi has had a programme of guided visits, thanks to an agreement between the Bilbao School of Engineering and this institution.

 

 

Itelazpi is a Basque public company, operator of telecommunications services and transport of radio and television signals at regional level in the Basque Country, under the Basque Government. 

The TSR Lab has worked with this operator since its creation in 2002 in various transmission network planning projects, broadcasting field trials and other services such as IoT.

The TSR Lab participated in the  Science Week (Zientzia Astea), 6-10 November 2024 in Bilbao, at the Bizkaia Aretoa-UPV/EHU building.

 

The stand entitled: 'Telecommunications: mastering the future' displayed a wireless transmission and a Chroma Key.

 

 

 

Zientzia Astea (Science, Technology and Innovation week) is an annual outreach event organized by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It takes place in 4 locations in the Basque Country (Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Barakaldo and San Sebastian-Donosti).
