Department of Mathematics

Our mission is to educate the mathematicians of the future, perform state-of-the-art research in mathematics, and transfer this knowledge to our society.

We teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics with links to other disciplines. We offer a double international degree in Mathematics with the University of Pau and the Pays de l'Adour. We also offer an interuniversity Master in Modeling and Mathematical Research, Statistics and Computing, and a Ph.D. programme in Mathematics and Statistics.

Our research covers the spectrum of fundamental and applied mathematics, including: differential geometry, topology, group theory, combinatorics, mathematical biology, number theory, linear and nonlinear algebra, Fourier analysis, functional analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, applied statistics, artificial intelligence, data analysis, numerical analysis, operational research, optimization, and their applications.

Our transfer of knowledge activities are oriented to: (a) the society at large, including collaborations in Radio Euskadi and Halabedi Irratia; divulgative articles; organization of lectures cycles in Bidebarrieta Library, and organization of workshops (BCAM, Chair of Scientific Culture of UPV/EHU, Mathematical Olympiads, Zientzia Astea, DIMA, Royal Spanish Mathematical Society and Pi Day events),  (b) the academic community, including the organization of conferences, schools and workshops, and (c) the industry and institutions, including collaborations with public institutions such as the health system, the traffic department or the institute for official statistics of the Basque Country, and a variety of Basque and international companies like Bridgestone, Euskotren, FCC, GKN Driveline Zumaia, Halliburton, PKF ATTest, Repsol, Team Ingeniería&Consultoría and Vicinay Cadenas.
