Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous materials, polyfunctional materials


Porous metal-organic materials (MOFs) are the best adsorbent materials known today, but they are also used in many other areas (catalysis, detection, energy ...). The research group is focused on the preparation and use of these new materials in two main areas: as chemical sensors and for the capture and the catalytic valorization of CO2.

Lines of Research

  1. POROUS MATERIALS BASED ON BIOMOLECULES. We use biomolecules such as nucleobases and amino acids to create new porous materials with higher adsorption selectivity that allows their application as chemical sensors.
  2. METAL-ORGANIC GELS AND AEROGELS. To increase the pore size of these materials (into the range of meso/macroporosity) they are processed in the form of gels (pores filled with a liquid) and aerogels (pores filled with air).
  3. SUSTAINABLE SYNTHETIC ROUTES. Development of new synthesis routes for the preparation of these porous metal-organic materials that are scalable, economically profitable and environmentally sustainable, through the use of solvent-free conditions and reduced reaction times by the use of microwave radiation. 
  4. JOINING THE METAL-ORGANIC CLUSTERING  AND POLYOXOMETALTE CHEMISTRIES. The objective of this line is to create new invigorated multifunctional hybrid materials where we combine the main characteristics of both families: porosity and catalytic activity, respectively.


  • Synthesis: Programmable oven; Photoreactor (photoLAB Batch-L); microwave assisted solvothermal reactor (Milestone ETHOS ONE). CO2 supercritical dryer (Quorum Technologies E3100) 
  • Characterization: FTIR Shimadzu 8400S; TGA/SDTA 851 thermobalance; UV/Vis spectrometer (6705 Jenway); gas adsorption analyzer (QuantaChrome Instruments Autosorb iQ)..
