Juan Miguel Oyarbide Garmendia studied chemistry at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, where he obtained the degree of Licenciado in 1986, and the PhD in 1991. After two-year postdoctoral stay at UC-Berkeley he returned to the Department of Organic Chemistry I at the Faculty of Chemistry of UPV/EHU (Donostia-San Sebastián) where he has held the positions of Asistant Professor, Tenure, and since 2003 Full Professor. JMO participates in the Masters program “Química Sintética e Industrial” and the homonymous Doctoral program. There he has also taught various courses in the areas of Organic and General Chemistry at the undergraduate level.
JMO scientific interests focus on Organic Synthesis, more specifically the development of methods and catalysts useful for asymmetric synthesis. In such area he has participated in >50 funded research proposals, in several of them as PI. He has published over 95 articles in Chemistry journals, many of them in JACS, ACIE or Chem. Sci., and is the coauthor of 9 book chapters and one patent. He has delivered 9 invited talks in conferences and has co-supervised 12 doctoral thesis. Some bibliometric data according to WoS database (2021/10/14): Total citations 6,337 (excluding self-citations 6,041); h index= 40. In the period 2004-2017 he was the academic registrar of the Faculty of Chemistry of UPV/EHU.
