Description

A specific training activity whose aim is for students to acquire the ability to perform and manage bibliographical searches on a research topic in the different relevant bibliographical databases.

Results

Applying search and bibliographical management tools to obtain information. Critically evaluating the relevant bibliographies in (mainly) English and Spanish.

Assessment systems

The students will perform works reviewing the state of the art of their research topics by means of the analysis of the main works to be found in a bibliographical search under the supervision of the Thesis Director. These reviews will be incorporated as a performed task into the doctoral activity document.

Description

A specific training activity whose aim is to enable students to understand the purposes and objectives of scientific research in any area. Bioethical aspects of experimentation and therapies. Embryonic and genetic manipulation. Bioethical connotations associated with functional foods. Rights and duties. Bioinformation. Social and historical impact.

Results

Applying the knowledge acquired in the evaluation of situations with a clear bioethical component. Evaluating potential ethical conflicts in research. Discussing the causes and consequences of situations involving a potential ethical conflict in a research environment. Applying national and international regulations to bioethics.

Assessment systems

This activity will be evaluated by means of the resolution of case studies, whereby the students will draw up a written document with the resolution of a series of issues with regard to case studies proposed and evaluated by the professor responsible for the training activity. The resolution of these case studies will be incorporated as a performed task into the doctoral activity document. The professor in charge will be the same for all the students of the 3 universities, thereby ensuring that the control mechanisms will be the same at all the participating universities.

Description

A transversal training activity whose aim is to provide advanced knowledge of the English language (written communication). Use of English will be worked on by means of immersion in the communicative context of the speciality, relating it to situations and documents characteristic of each area. The specific content of this module will be tools for written expression (Academic Writing). University where the activity is held: University of the Balearic Islands. One requirement will be accreditation of a B2 level of English in order to work fluently within a C1 level context.

Results

Acquiring communicative written fluency by means of use of the English language, with particular focus on scientific communication.

Assessment systems

The training activities of a transversal nature organized by the Doctoral School of the University of the Balearic Islands will contain specific control mechanisms based on objective tests (written and oral tests). Generally speaking, the director or tutor will be responsible for transferring his or her evaluation of the level of benefit to the doctoral activity document.

Description

A transversal training activity whose aim is to provide advanced knowledge of the English language (oral communication). Use of English will be worked on by means of immersion in the communicative context of the speciality, relating it to situations and documents characteristic of each area. The specific content of this module will be tools for fluent oral expression (seminars, presentations and workshops). University where the activity is held: University of the Balearic Islands. One requirement will be accreditation of a B2 level of English in order to work fluently within a C1 level context.

Results

Acquiring communicative oral fluency by means of use of the English language, with particular focus on scientific communication.

Description

Research stays at other national and international institutions. The objectives are multiple: firstly, to further development of one or more aspects of the doctoral thesis topic in collaboration with the host research group and, secondly, to enrich the student's global training in terms of ethnic and cultural diversity, by means of his or her interaction with researchers and students from other origins. The activity will be supervised by the thesis director and by the professor/researcher of the host centre.

Results

Acquiring and expanding knowledge of the field of research. Developing and communicating knowledge and results in a scientific manner in a professional environment of the area of interest.

Assessment systems

The control procedure for this activity will be based on the preparation of a technical report summarizing the activities carried out and the achievements, which must have the approval of the contact professor/researcher of the host centre and be corrected by the student's thesis director for evaluation. There will be a professor to coordinate this activity who will establish the guidelines and provide information on the aspects to be included in the report and how they will be evaluated so as to ensure that the control mechanisms are appropriate and the same at all the participating universities. The report will be included in the doctoral activity document.

Description

A specific training activity consisting of seminars in which the students enrolled on the doctoral program, the thesis directors, other researchers directly related to the program and renowned guest researchers perform an exposition of scientific seminars on ongoing lines of research and investigation. The participation of all the students on the program will be encouraged, both as listeners and as oral presenters of their research lines and projects for the realization of their theses. The number of activity hours includes the preparation time for the exposition and attendance at the other presentations. Whenever the circumstances permit, this type of activity will also be encouraged in the field of national and international congresses, workshops, etc., promoting the participation of the students in the presentation of the results of experiments in poster/oral format at congresses and similar meetings in the field of study. In addition, the annual organization of a workshop will be promoted between the three participating universities, with a video conference connection and presentations by students and senior researchers.

Results

Critically evaluating the relevant literature. Applying the scientific method to the design of experiments. Analyzing the research results and presenting them to a specialized audience in a coherent manner. Fluently delivering the oral defence of the research results.

Assessment systems

The presentation and oral defence of the results of the experiments and attendance at the seminars will be the control elements used to evaluate the benefit to the students of this training activity. Moreover, the audiovisual material used by the students in their respective oral defences will be included in the doctoral activity documents. To ensure that the control mechanisms are appropriate and the same at all the participating universities, the evaluation of the oral defence will be made by two professors who form part of the program (acting as an evaluation tribunal), while there will be a professor responsible for monitoring students' attendance at the seminars (at the three universities).

Description

Transversal training activity whose aim is to enable students to acquire an understanding of the ways of transferring knowledge and innovation. Basic R&D&I legislation. Protection of industrial and intellectual property. Technology transfer strategies: article 83 of the Organic Law on Universities, operational licences, spin-offs.

Results

Applying the knowledge acquired to development and innovation in the food sector. Ability to design a knowledge transfer project (patent or creation of a spin-off company) applied to research results. Capacity to exploit the know-how acquired during the research period for the carrying out of research into Molecular and/or Applied Nutrition.

Assessment systems

Each student will perform a technological transfer project related to his or her doctoral thesis topic, which will be corrected and evaluated by the professor responsible for the training activity and incorporated into the doctoral activity document. The professor in charge will be the same for all the students of the 3 universities, thereby ensuring that the control mechanisms will be the same at all the participating universities.
