Visiting Students

Educational Opportunities for Incoming Students

Welcome to the Faculty of Education of Bilbao! This page gives you an overview of the academic options available to you as a visiting student during your stay with us.

Courses Taught in English

Visiting students enrolled in the Bachelor's Degrees in Primary Education or Early Childhood Education can follow a selection of courses taught entirely in English. These are organised into themed packs of 30 ECTS per semester, designed to offer a coherent and enriching academic experience.

Pack 2 – Core Pedagogies in Education (30 ECTS) Foreign Language Teaching · Physical Education & its Didactics OR Plastic & Visual Culture in Early Childhood Education · Information & Communication Technology in Early Childhood Education · English for the Infant and Primary Classroom · Theory and History of Education OR French

Second Semester

Pack 1 – Integrated Didactics in Education Didactics of Social Sciences · Principles of Language Teaching in Early Childhood · Plastic Arts & Visual Culture in Early Childhood · Development of Musical Expression · Didactics of Foreign Language Teaching (EN/FR)

Pack 2 – Teaching for Multilingual and Creative Learning Principles of Language Teaching in Primary Education in Multilingual Settings · Information & Communication Technology in Primary Education · Plastic Arts & Visual Culture in Early Childhood · Development of Musical Expression · Didactics of Foreign Language Teaching (EN/FR)

Language Substitution Option Within any pack, students may replace one or two courses with a language course (6 ECTS each): Spanish for Foreigners or Basque (Euskera) for Foreigners. A great way to develop language skills while living in a genuinely bilingual region.

School Placement – PAIC Programme (PractInComing)

One of the most distinctive features of studying at our faculty is the PAIC (PractInComing) programme, which allows visiting students to complete a genuine teaching placement in Basque public schools in the province of Bizkaia. This goes beyond observation: depending on the level, students design, deliver, and evaluate their own classroom interventions.

Practicum Level ECTS Main Focus
Practicum I 6 ECTS School observation and discovery. Immersion in the Basque educational context.
Practicum II 12 ECTS Deeper analysis of the school, structured observations, and comparative reflection.
Practicum III 18 ECTS Designing, implementing, and evaluating teaching interventions in the classroom.

PAIC can be taken as a standalone programme or combined with courses from any of the semester packs. Students receive support from both a university tutor and a school mentor throughout. Please note that placements involving work with children require a certificate of criminal record.

English Friendly Courses (EFC)

Looking to take subjects taught in Spanish or Basque? English Friendly Courses are undergraduate and Master's subjects in which lecturers are willing to tutor, conduct examinations, and accept written work in English. They are designed for international students with an intermediate level of Spanish or Basque who are more comfortable working in English.
