Aitor Laza is part of the research and teaching staff of the Plant Biol. and Ecol. Dpt. of the UPV/EHU. Currently, he is coordinator of Final Degree Projects in the Commission of Degree Studies in Biology.



He teaches Ecology and Marine Ecology in the undergraduate program, and also teaches the master course “Eutrophication and Harmful Algae”.



He obtained the PhD in 2009 with the Thesis “Criptofitas del estuario del rio Nervión-Ibaizabal”. He has 20 years of research experience on phytoplankton. He has been collaborator in 10 projects (open calls) and principal researcher in 11 contracts with companies. He has co-supervised a PhD Thesis on benthic dinoflagellates and eleven Master Thesis projects.



His research has dealt with the study of the ecology of phytoplankton, analytical techniques for the study of phytoplankton, ecophysiology through in vitro assays and systematics of several microalgae taxa. From these studies, more than 35 papers in international journals have been published (H index 19) and more than 80 communications have been presented in congresses.



In addition to his research in the UPV/EHU, Aitor Laza is member of the Dept. of Herpetology of the Society of Sciences Aranzadi, where he has been involved in more than 20 projects or activities dealing with the study, management and dissemination of the herpetofauna.
