Enrique Ortega (San Sebastian, 1963) got his Bachelor (1986) and Ph. D. (1990) in Physics at the Autonoma University of Madrid. He became post-doc at the IBM Yorktown Heights Research Center in New York (1991-1993), returned to Spain as a junior researcher at the Autonoma (1993-1995), and moved to San Sebastian where he became (2003-) Professor of Applied Physics. He funded the Nanophysics Lab.

His scientific interest is focused on nanostructures of varied nature. His expertise encompasses all electron spectroscopies, being an expert in synchrotron radiation research. His work on electronic states of quantum wells developed in the 90’s is the keystone of his career, which prompted most of the physics ideas that now fuel scientific research in the Nanolab. In particular, the idea of using curved crystal sample, which serve to revisit controversial problems that involve atomic steps, such as electron scattering, growth, and chemistry/catalysis. Results are impressively clear and demonstrate the tremendous potential of the curved crystal approach in Surface Science.

Ortega has published more than 160 scientific articles, many of them in highly-ranked journals. He has presented about 130 invited seminars in Research centers, international conferences and workshops. Since 1996 Enrique Ortega teaches “Physics for Architects” at the School of Architecture of the University of the Basque Country.
