The Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication has different facilities in which the doctoral students can perform their research work.It has 17 seminar rooms for training activities, meetings, etc., equipped with a 50" plasma screen, a whiteboard, a PC + mouse/wireless keyboard, internet connection, audio and video cables for laptop connection and a PC/laptop switch. It also has a computer room for the free use of the students (30 places) and another study room (Ikertum) for the exclusive use of research staff (mostly pre- and post-doctoral students) with 26 workplaces, in addition to another for undergraduates (60 places).
The Faculty has 7 multimedia rooms (4 equipped with MAC computers and 3 with PCs), with a total of 224 computers equipped with software for video editing, statistical analysis, qualitative analysis, graphic design and more. The Audiolab laboratory has three radio rooms and an audio post-production room. The Bideolab laboratory has 5 video editing rooms, equipped with an Avid Media Composer. The Gesell laboratory is an observation chamber for group dynamics, interactions and interpersonal relationships, group discussions, interviews, etc. It is divided into two spaces, the first for carrying out the activity (up to 20 people) and the second for observation (14 people), divided by a one-way mirror. It is equipped with audio and video technology which allows the recording of the sessions. In addition to the strict use of direct observation and interaction evaluation, this laboratory can be used for experimental research and the development of qualitative techniques (interviews, group discussions, etc.) and, of course, the teaching of research techniques and group dynamics. The Catilab laboratory has the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) system, whereby telephone interviews are automated. The CATI system is used for conducting surveys for sociological studies. With this focus, each interviewer conducts a survey administered by software. This is made up of 10 Gandia Barbwin licences, 10 Gandia Quest floating licences (including Codi), internet access via Gandia Integra and the Linphone free-dial software with headset + microphone, making a total of 30 student places and 1 teaching place.Fotolab I and II are two photography laboratories.Mikrofilmalab is a microfilming and digitalization laboratory which, owing to its tradition in the Faculty, has generated an important historical archive which is available to researchers. This collection, made up of 4,600 microfiches and 3,150 rolls, with a total of 4,800,000 still images, is perfectly catalogued and filed in 47,000 computer archives, which quickly facilitate the locating of any document. It has a particularly good collection of historical press files.Bideotekalab is a video library for viewing videos with more than 7,000 titles, whose catalogue is available on the internet.
The premises which house the Doctoral Program are just a few metres away from the Central Library of the UPV/EHU. Consequently, students can easily get to the reference and reading areas available there. For the existing collections to meet the needs of the enrolled students in terms of content and updating, the proponent departments will order the appropriate bibliographical works from those responsible for the library. It is the purpose of all the teaching staff to endure that the books and scientific articles which are essential for the conducting of the studies and research are available and accessible to the students on the program.
