M. Carril has a PhD in Chemistry, which she obtained in 2006 from the UPV/EHU, under the supervision of Prof. Esther Domínguez and Dr. Raul SanMartin. Her background and initial field of research was in synthetic chemistry, both during her PhD studies and her 2 postdoctoral stays in Germany (with Prof. C. Bolm and Prof. F. E. Kühn), where she worked mostly on metal-catalysed cross-coupling reactions. In 2010, she joined CIC biomaGUNE in San Sebastián (with Prof. Soledad Penadés) as a Juan de la Cierva Fellow and since then she changed her field of research and started working in nanotechnology applied to bioimaging. In 2013 she was awarded an Ikerbasque Research Fellow grant which she developed at CIC biomaGUNE. In 2015 she associated to the group of Prof. Wolfgang J. Parak (Univ. Hamburg & CIC biomaGUNE). In May 2018, after a positive evaluation by an external scientific board, she was promoted to a permanent position as Ikerbasque Research Associate and joined Instituto Biofisika (CSIC, UPV/EHU, Leioa) as Group Leader of the FluoroNanoTools laboratory. Nowadays, her research focus is in the boundaries between organic chemistry, nanotechnology and bio(nano)medicine. Her laboratory is focused on on the design of fluorinated nanoprobes for 19F-MRI and aims at expanding the uses of fluorinated nanoparticles, not only as imaging probes, but also as vehicles for drug delivery purposes, taking advantage of the particular properties of fluorinated molecules.
