He studied the degree in Chemistry at the University of Zaragoza and obtained his PhD in 1986 at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). From 1987 to 1988 he carried out a postdoctoral stay with Prof. Jean Paul Picard at the CNRS in Talence (France). In 1993 he was a visiting scholar at UCLA in the group of Prof. K.N. Houk.

From 1988 to 2002 he worked as associate professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry I of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences of San Sebastián. In 2002 he obtained his full professorship in the same department. Since 1993, he coordinates a research group on Bioorganic Chemistry and Molecular Modeling that owes the mention of the Basque Government's Consolidated Group, type A.

His scientific career is supported by 240 publications in indexed international journals, 5 book chapters and a monograph, as well as 65 contributions to scientific conferences and meetings, 15 invited conferences, 14 patents and participation in 51 R&D projects (financed by both public entities and private companies). He has also supervised 26 PhD thesis in the area of synthetic and computational organic chemistry, two of which have been distinguished with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award and four of them received European Thesis mention. He has also co-founded the biotechnology spin-off company Ikerchem S.L., dedicated to the development of new compounds with applications in oncology.
