Ion Errea graduated in physics in 2007 at the UPV/EHU and obtained his PhD at the same university in 2011. After defending his thesis he moved to the group of Francesco Mauri and Matteo Calandra at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) in Paris as a postdoctoral researcher, where he stayed for two years. When coming back from Paris he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). He is an Assistant Professor of the UPV/EHU in the Department of Applied Physics 1 since 2015. He actually lectures at the Engineering School of Gipuzkoa.

The main area of his research involves the development of novel ab initio methods for the calculation of complex properties of solids and nanostructures. He currently leads the ERC Starting Grant project SuperH, which focuses on the theoretical discovery and characterization of new hydrogen-based superconductors.
