He is Professor of Indo-European Linguistics at the UPV / EHU (Vitoria-Gasteiz). He is member of the Doctorate programs of Sciences of Antiquity and of Linguistics, for which he has been responsible. He holds the maximum teaching and research recognition outlined in the Basque higher education system.

His research activity focuses on the study of pre-Roman languages of Western Europe, especially those spoken in the Iberian Peninsula. He has worked on various aspects of languages, from texts and inscriptions to secondary onomastic material, combining linguistic and historical data in his research. He is the author of the Onomastics of Aquitaine (1984), a standard monograph on Aquitanian, and more than 150 articles and book chapters on ancient Basque, Paleohispanic languages and epigraphs, historical and comparative linguistics, and Latin epigraphy.

He has been the chief researcher in 12 research projects financed by the public bodies.

He is a full member of Jakiunde, the Basque Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters and a corresponding member of Euskaltzaindia (the Royal Academy of the Basque Language) and the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE). He is the President of the International Committee for the Coloquios on Palaeohispanic Languages and Cultures and the responsible for the Hesperia Data Bank for Paleohispanic Languages and Epigraphs (http://hesperia.ucm.es/index.php).
