He obtained a Degree in Chemistry in 1985 at the University of the Basque Country (speciality of physical chemistry), and a PhD in Chemistry in 1990 at the same university with a work about laser induced fluorescence of halogens. He worked as a postdoc at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cambridge (1991-1992). Since 1992 he is a lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Technology in the UPV/EHU.

He has been Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry (2013-2017), and also Secretary of Department (2004-2007 and 2008-2009). He is the coordinator of the Doctoral Programme Laser Applications in Chemistry.

He is coauthor of near 60 scientific articles, and has obtained recognition of five periods of six-year research from the National Committee for the Assessment of the Research Action (CNEAI). His research interests have focused on laser and high resolution spectroscopy of molecules in the gas phase and infrared spectroscopy of atmospheric particles. Currently he works in the field of rotational spectroscopy of molecules in the gas phase.
