Date
08/10/2026, 12:35
The next seminar will be given by Hamza Amal (EHU), on Thursday 8th of October from 12:35 in room B0.13.
Hamza is a PhD candidate in Economic Analysis Department, supervised by Jaromir Kovarik and Adam Sanjurjo (Alicante). He will be presenting part of his PhD thesis.
Abstract: Space complexity measures the working memory required to solve a problem. We extend the space-complexity framework for multiattribute choice (Sanjurjo, 2026) to choice under uncertainty, where probabilities create additional memory requirements but also opportunities for principled reductions. Our experiment manipulates these sources of complexity through processing order and the structure and presentation of probabilities. Introducing probabilities sharply reduces the complexity advantage of alternative-by-alternative processing, with corresponding changes in performance and beliefs. A naive extension of space complexity, which treats probabilities as additional information to be stored, already outperforms standard competing models; a refined measure incorporating memory-saving reductions suggested by behavior, beliefs, and reported strategies improves explanatory power further. The framework also rationalizes otherwise puzzling effects of probability ordering and repeated probability information. Finally, when free to choose how to process information, subjects overwhelmingly construct low-space-complexity processing orders. Together, the results shed light on the computational representations underlying choice under uncertainty.
