Visit by Professor Dorota Szymborska
March 2026: Visit by Professor Dorota Szymborska (WSB Merito University, Poland)
From Warsaw to Bilbao: A Return to Euskadi and Discussions on AI Ethics
Thanks to the exchange program from my home institution, WSB MERITO University in Warsaw, I had the great pleasure of teaching students at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Bilbao. However, this visit was more than just a brief infatuation with the beauty of the Basque Country and its fascinating university. My bond with the region goes back years - I studied in the Basque Country a long time ago and later carried out a research grant here. I try (with quite good success) to visit Euskadi as often as possible, because this is where my friends are.
This time, my visit was purely academic. Thanks to the kindness of Professor Jon Las Heras Cuenca, I had the privilege of working with a wonderful group of students. Unsurprisingly, the topic of my lecture was AI Ethics. We had a truly inspiring and deep discussion. The classroom was filled with a great, diverse group, including both international Erasmus exchange students and local Basque students enrolled in the English-taught program.
The visit was also a perfect opportunity to establish institutional relations. I had the pleasure of meeting with the Dean Eva Velasco Balmaseda to discuss our universities and the prospects for further cooperation.
One thing is for sure: I definitely want to come back. During my next visit, I plan to prepare a lecture in Spanish - after all, I haven't been learning the language for nothing! My Euskera is still, unfortunately, too weak. To be honest, it is pretty much limited to ordering pintxos.
In the attached photo, you can see two brave students who smiled and agreed to pose as soon as I mentioned the picture would end up on the university website, and, of course, Professor Jon, who generously "gave up" his class time for me.
So, I am not saying goodbye (Agur), but rather see you later (Gero arte)!
