Assessment systems
Marks are usually awarded after a final exam designed to confirm that the student in question has acquired the required knowledge and skills. Many subjects also include practical, field and laboratory work. The Bologna system's pedagogical approach is based on the continuous assessment of students’ progress. As such, all exercises, reports, assignments and homework completed by students are taken into account in the final mark awarded for each subject.
ECTS credits
Undergraduate studies in Spain require students to earn 240 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits, and Master's studies require them to earn 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. One academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS credits; and 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25 hours of student work. The ECTS system recognises qualifications earned throughout the European Higher Education Area.
Marking system
The marking scale in Spain can be numerical (0 to 10) or textual. A minimum mark of 5 is required to pass the subject and obtain the corresponding credits.
