Description:

This project aims at analyzing the relationship between languages and language and content. It will develop and apply a pedagogical intervention to improve multilingual competence and achievement in mathematics and science in primary and secondary school. The project is at the crossroads of recent studies on multilingualism in education advocating for softening boundaries between languages and studies on content and language integrated learning. The project is linked to immersion in education, content-based instruction (CBI) and content and language integrated learning (CLIL) because it focuses on situations faced by many students who learn content subjects at school through the medium of a second or additional language. This project will be carried out in the Basque Country where the challenge of learning a second or additional language can be found in three situations:

i)    Students of Spanish as an L1 who learn content subjects through the medium of Basque, which is the main language of instruction in the Basque Autonomous Community.
ii)    Students with Basque, Spanish or other L1s who learn some content subjects matter through the medium of English.
iii)    Students with home languages that are not Basque or Spanish and learn content subjects through the medium of Basque or Spanish.
