Doctor in Sociology (University of Deusto, 1991). Professor of the UPV/EHU (since 1996).
Head of the CIVERSITY Research Group (http://civersity.net).
Four research sections (sexenios) recognized by the CNEAI.
He has directed 22 doctoral theses.
Member of the Committee of Ethics in Research with Human Beings of the UPV / EHU.
Since the 2014/2015 academic year, he is the Coordinator of the Doctorate Program in Development Studies, which has the Mention for Excellence granted by the Ministry of Education.
Coordinator of the 6th chapter of the VII Report on exclusion and social development in Spain (2014).
Coordinator (together with María Silvestre, University of Deusto) of the 5th chapter of the VIII Report on exclusion and social development in Spain (2019).
Between April 2007 and December 2018 he has been President of the Basque Association of Sociology and Political Science.
