Bachelor of Computer Science (1990, UPV/EHU, Special Prize), Master of Science in Knowledge Based Systems (1991, University of Edinburgh), and Doctor in Computer Science (1999, UPV/EHU). Lecturer at this university since 1995, now full professor. Head of the LSI department (2017-2019). Spanish National Prize on Informatics Research in 2021. ACL fellow since 2021.



Head of the HiTZ research center (hitz.ehu.eus) and the IXA group (ixa.si.ehu.eus). He has directed 15 PhD theses. He has been a visiting researcher or professor at 5 universities: New Mexico State, Melbourne, Southern California, Stanford and New York. He has participated in 50 research projects, 15 of them as principal investigator, in competitive calls in Europe, Spain and the Basque Country. He has had 9 transfer contracts with companies. He has more than 200 articles, including 13 top journals (Q1 or Q2) and 49 top conferences (class SCIE 1/2). He has 5 sexenios. He has been a member of the editorial committee in the two top journals in his field (Computational Linguistics, TACL) as well as JAIR, and secretary and president of SIGLEX. Founder of the STARSEM conference (*SEM), now in its 11th edition. He has won three best paper awards and three Google research awards (2016, 2018 and 2019). He has held 20 invited talks, most of them international. His research topics are artificial intelligence and language technology, especially based on deep learning.
