Biography

Javier Barroso graduated with a degree in Chemistry (Organic) from University of Basque Country (UPV-EHU). Then, he was awarded with a Fellowship for doctoral studies (FPI) by Ministry of Education and Science of Spain. In 2009, he did a Master Degree in Environmental Engineering with the collaboration of UPV-EHU and University of Cantabria (UC).

He obtained his Ph.D. in November 2011 under the direction of Prof. Ángel Rodriguez Pierna. His doctoral dissertation was entitled “Microparticulated electrodes of amorphous NiNbPtX alloys for Direct Alcohols Fuel Cells (DAFCs)”. During his Ph.D., he was visiting scholar at University of Alicante (Spain). He worked in “FTIR studies for analyzing of intermediate products from ethanol electrooxidation”, under the supervision of Prof. Emilia Morallón Nuñez. Furthermore, he completed his Ph.D. in the Univesity of Poitiers (France) as visiting scholar as well. He carried out studies about “Oxygen reduction reaction onto amorphous catalysts”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nicolas Alonso-Vante.

In 2014, he joined Dr. ValeriPavlov´s Biosensing Laboratory at CIC biomaGUNE (San Sebastián) as postdoctoral researcher. His research was focused on the development of biophotonic nanosensors based on photocatalytic properties of semiconductor and metal nanoparticles for biomedical applications and environmental monitoring. Currently, he is working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Microfluidics&Biomics Cluster UPV-EHU at the University of the Basque Country.

Research

His main research is focused on development of microfluidics platforms based on gold nanoparticles (GNPs) integrated in optical fibers as optical nanosensors. Recently, he carried out a secondment under the DNASURF RISE project at Hokkaido University, under the supervision of Prof. Kuniharu Ijiro. He learnt how to control de orientation of GNPs using DNA as scaffold.
