The continuous need for new technology in the water monitoring research is the driving force of this proposed work. A bibliographic investigation on the current state of the different techniques available for the detection of phosphates in water is presented. The review follows an evolutionary approach of the technology, from the traditional methods and equipment to the integration of phosphates detection methods in microfluidic devices for the generation of handheld and point of need miniaturized devices.
