Bachelor (1981) and Ph. D (1987) in Law from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and Professor of Philosophy of Law at the Faculty of Law of the same University, where he served as Dean for ten years. He leads the Master in Democratic Society, State and Law, also at the UPV/EHU. His academic work include his lectures as professor in the Master of Legal Argumentation of the University of Alicante and the Master in Human Rights at Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM).
He is the author of over twenty books and more than sixty articles on the theory and philosophy of Law, has directed over ten doctoral theses, is a member of a Research Group A of the Basque University System (IP Edorta Cobreros Mendazona), and has been awarded five six-year research periods by the CNEAI (sexenios).
He has persued pre and postdoctoral research in Belgium, Italy, Poland, Germany and Mexico and has taught in Europe and America, both in academic and judicial institutions which includes the Supreme Court and Federal Judicial Institute in Mexico, the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic, Guatemala's Constitutionality Court , and National Council of Magistrates in Peru, among others institutions.
