Industrial doctorate

Chapter IX of the Implementing Rules for Doctorate Teaching  at the UPV/EHU includes the “Industrial Doctorate mention”. The PhD qualification may include the “Industrial Doctorate” mention on the front, providing that the following conditions are met:

  1. The doctoral student must participate in an industrial research or experimental development project that unfolds at the company or public or private institution at which they are providing their services (and which cannot be a university).

  2. The doctoral student must have signed a work or commercial contract with a public administration or company in the public or private sector, as long as it is not a university. This contract may not be for a period of time lower than the equivalent of one year working full time, and it must be valid within the time the student is enrolled on their doctoral programme.

Application procedure for an Industrial Doctorate mention

  1. The thesis director, the student, and the company must fill in the Project Specifications for the “Industrial Doctorate” mention (form number20) and the relevant details in the industrial thesis form (docx, 51 Kb), and send them, along with a copy of the doctoral student’s contract, to the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Programme at least one year prior to submitting their thesis. The specifications must be validated by the person in charge at the collaborating body and the thesis director, and they must show the relationship between the industrial project and the doctoral thesis.

  2. The Academic Commission (AC) will review the specifications and issue a report (positive or negative) regarding form number 20.

  3. Should the report be positive, the Academic Commission will send the Project Specifications (form number 20), duly filled in and signed by the Commission cooordinator, along with a copy of the contract and the completed industrial thesis form (docx, 51 Kb) to the administrative officer in charge of the doctoral programme.

  4. Should the report be negative the Academic Commission will send the signed report, by means of form number 20, to the thesis director, the student and the company. In this case, this procedure will be considered to be concluded.

  5. The administrative officer of the doctoral programme must upload both form number 20, duly filled in and signed, and the copy of the contract to GAUR. Likewise, the administrative officer for the doctoral programme will send a signed copy of form number 20 by email to the thesis directors and student in question.

  6. When submitting the thesis, the doctoral student must attach form number 19 to apply for the “Industrial Doctorate” mention.

Collaboration agreement between the university and the collaborating body.

According to chapter IX of the Implementing Rules forDoctoral Teaching, when the industrial research or experimental development project is undertaken between the UPV/EHU and the body at which the doctoral student provides their services, there must be a collaboration agreement in place between the parties.

This agreement may be established if the corresponding positive report (through form number 20) has first been received from the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Programme. The collaboration agreements between the university and the company must be in line with the model*(model no. 4).

Procedure to formalise the agreement in keeping with the model (model number 4)

  1. The doctoral student, together with their director, will apply to the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Programme, expressing their interest in formalising a university-body collaboration agreement within the framework of a previously approved industrial thesis.

  2. In the event that the Academic Commission approves the formalisation of said agreement, the Commission coordinator will send the application to the Doctoral School (hereinafter DocS) by writing to doke.hitzarmenak@ehu.eus.

  3. The DocS will prepare the agreement in keeping with the model* using the details provided in the industrial thesis form (the same that was provided in the application, providing the person representing the company is the same). Two copies of the agreement and two copies of the appendix will be generated, one copy of the agreement and the appendix for the company, and another copy of each (agreement plus appendix) for the DocS. Furthermore, copies of the agreement and the appendix will be issued for the doctoral student, for the Academic Commission, and for the UPV/EHU director (and UPV/EHU co-directors, where applicable).

  4. The DocS will sign the two copies, both of the agreement and the appendix, and give them to the UPV/EHU director to collect the remaining signatures.

  5. The director will then pass on the signed copy of the agreement and the appendix for the DocS to the programme’s administrative officer.

  6. The programme’s administrative officer will also keep the Academic Commission’s copies should the coordinator deem this appropriate. They will also hand out the doctoral students’ and directors’ copies.

  7. The programme’s administrative officer will register the agreement and the appendix in GAUR.

* In the event that the agreement to be formalised is not in keeping with the model, please write to the Vice-Rector of Postgraduate Studies and Continuous Education.
