International trainees (voluntary student internships): Access
Voluntary internships in EHU organizational units for international students NOT studying at the EHU
In general terms, students from other universities who are NOT studying at the EHU are not subject to the EHU’s regulations on external academic internships.
However, their acceptance at the EHU is governed by the Third Additional Provision of those Regulations (Resolution of December 11, 2025).
Also, in the case of university students, their internship agreement must comply with Royal Decree 592/2014 of July 11, which regulates external academic internships for university students.
Summary of the procedure
1.- Search for internships by students and the role of the person in charge at the EHU
Interested students can get in touch with organizational units of the EHU to do internships. If they find an organizational unit willing to accept them, the person in charge of that unit will be responsible for making sure the applicable procedure is followed.
2.- Procedure
-
Carrying out the internships will require the prior signing of an agreement between the EHU and the student's home institution.
-
The procedure for processing the agreement will be initiated and driven by the head of the organizational unit where the internships are to be carried out. This person will be responsible for contacting the student’s home institution and drafting the agreement, as well as verifying that it contains the required content and complies with the applicable regulations. They will also be responsible for monitoring and following up on the agreement. During the processing of the agreement, the head of the organizational unit where the internships will take place will collect reports from any other EHU structures that might be affected by the internship.
See as a reference the Annexes of the regulations applicable to students at the EHU, especially Annex III.
-
The signing of the agreement will correspond to the vice-rector of the unit in which the internships are going to take place or, if they are going to be carried out in a faculty or school, to the Dean or Director of the same. In any case, the agreements referred to in the previous sections may always, for reasons of convenience, be signed by the rector.
-
Once the agreement is signed, the person responsible for the unit where the internships will take place will send a copy of it to the Registry of Agreements at the General Secretariat. For additional information on this step, please, write to hitzarmenak@ehu.eus.
3.- Insurance
The person in charge of the organizational unit must ensure that the hosted students have accident and health insurance, transport and repatriation insurance, and liability insurance, with coverage similar to the insurance offered by the IBILI insurance at the EHU. More information is available in the section on INSURANCE.
4.- University card
After signing the agreement, the person responsible for the organizational unit must handle the authorization and issuance of the EHU ID card through the Directorate of External Relations of the corresponding Campus Vice-Rectorate (Araba, Bizkaia, and Gipuzkoa).
5.- Funding, tax obligations, and social security
Except for justified exceptions, which must have the authorization of the Management, no funding will be provided by the EHU to students from other institutions doing internships at this university. Compliance with tax and Social Security obligations will correspond to the students' home institution, a situation that must be expressly reflected in the corresponding agreement.
