“Basque Language Doctorate” distinction
On 3 February 2026, the Resolution establishing the Regulations for the Management of Official Doctoral Programmes at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) was published. As set out in Chapter IX of the resolution, doctoral students who write their thesis in Basque language may be awarded the distinction ‘Basque Language Doctorate’ provided they meet a series of requirements. Planning is responsible for processing the acceptance reports required to obtain the designation.
The Vice-Rectorate for Basque and Language Planning will monitor the process of writing theses in Basque by doctoral candidates aspiring to obtain the designation "Basque Language Doctorate". The purpose of this monitoring is to ensure the authorship and linguistic quality of the theses. Participation in the monitoring of the process will be mandatory for obtaining the acceptance report.
Obtaining the "Basque Language Doctorate" distinction entails exemption from the C2 level accreditation, in accordance with Decree 47/2012.
On a transitional basis, doctoral candidates may opt for the "Basque Language Doctorate" distinction or may avail themselves of the previous regulations (Resolution of 25 April 2024).
