GUREIKER. Digital Communication and Media Research Group (IT1939-26)

Since its creation in 2016, the group has established a strong and sustained record in research, scientific publishing, knowledge transfer, training and academic cooperation. Its work combines the study of transformations in the media ecosystem with particular attention to their social, professional and cultural implications.

Gureiker conducts research on communication in digital environments and on the role played by platforms, social media and digital news media in the ways in which society accesses information, participates and makes decisions. It examines how technology is reshaping the production, circulation and consumption of information, as well as how these changes affect relationships between citizens, media organisations and institutions.

Since its creation in 2016, the group has developed sustained activity in research, scientific publishing, knowledge transfer, training and academic cooperation. Its work combines the study of transformations in the media ecosystem with particular attention to their social, professional and cultural implications.

Research, knowledge transfer and collaboration

A significant part of Gureiker’s activity is carried out in collaboration with institutions, media organisations, research centres, professional bodies and civil society organisations.

In recent years, the group has participated in research and knowledge-transfer projects and initiatives with organisations including Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, Emakunde, FECYT, Eroski Foundation, the Provincial Council of Biscay and BC3 – Basque Centre for Climate Change, among others. These collaborations have addressed issues related to media literacy, equality, science communication, health and food communication, environmental and climate communication, and the journalistic use of open data.

The group also maintains collaborative relationships with professional organisations and third-sector bodies in areas related to ethics and responsible communication, inclusion, innovation and information quality.

This connection with the professional sphere is also developed through the Business Classroom, conceived as a meeting point between the university and the professional sector to promote training, research, innovation and knowledge-transfer activities.

Gureiker also maintains a regular programme of scientific and professional events. These include the International Conference on Cyberjournalism and Digital Communication, the Newsnet Seminar, the Women and the Media Conference, the Educational Innovation and Media Literacy Conference, the Social Communication Conference, the Inclusion, Disability and Communication Conference, and the Doctoral Summer School.

Training and shared knowledge

The training and development of research talent is another key area of the group’s activity. Gureiker is involved at different stages of the research career, from students’ first contact with basic and applied research through the Basque Government’s Ikasiker grants to predoctoral and postdoctoral training.

Members of the group supervise doctoral theses, Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations, and researchers funded through predoctoral programmes of the Basque Government and EHU. They also supervise researchers within competitive national postdoctoral programmes, including the Juan de la Cierva fellowships awarded by the Spanish State Research Agency, under the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, which support the incorporation and further training of early-career researchers who have recently completed their doctorates.

Gureiker is also involved in EHU’s official postgraduate programmes, including the Master’s Degree in Communication Research and the EHU-EITB Master’s Degree in Multimedia Communication. In addition, the group encourages student participation in research activities through placements, collaboration grants, and involvement in research projects and academic events.

Knowledge transfer also includes the development of teaching and outreach materials, microcredentials, open educational resources, guides, multimedia content, datasets and other resources derived from the group’s research. These initiatives help extend research results beyond academia and make them accessible to professional and wider social audiences.
