Industrial doctorate

IMPORTANT: in the case of students who are doing an industrial thesis, this procedure is mandatory for PhD students enrolling for the first time from the 2024/2025 academic year onwards, and optional for PhD students who enrolled prior to the 2024/2025 academic year. 
The rest of the documentation required to qualify for the industrial mention must be submitted once the doctoral thesis is finished, following the "Thesis deposit and defence protocol".

Chapter XII of the Regulations for Managing Official Doctoral Studies at the UPV/EHU makes provision for the 'Industrial Doctorate' distinction.Doctorate certificates may feature on the front the 'Industrial Doctorate' distinction, provided the following conditions are met:

  • a) The thesis developed a research project addressing the industrial, commercial, social or cultural interest of an entity, public or private company or public administration. This does not include universities, public research organisations (national or regional) or university hospitals.
  • b) An agreement has been signed between the entity, company or public administration and the university outlining the academic development of the doctoral thesis. The agreement must be signed prior to the commencement of any collaboration with the entity.
  • c) The doctoral candidate was employed by the entity, company or public administration in which they completed their research project for at least one year during the time they were working on their thesis, and a substantial part of said thesis must have been developed within the entity, company or public administration.

University-entity collaboration agreement.

The agreement must be signed prior to the commencement of the collaboration with the entity.In other words, prior to commencement of the doctoral thesis being produced at the entity.As a necessary precondition for this agreement to be formalised: (a) the doctoral student must be enrolled on a doctoral programme at the UPV/EHU; (b) the doctoral student must have paid the doctoral enrolment fee; (c) the commitment document must be signed by all parties and uploaded to GAUR (further details as to the commitment document).

Procedure for formalisation of the agreement in accordance with the template (template number 4):

  1. The doctoral candidate and their director file a request with the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Programme as to their wish to formalise a university-entity collaboration agreement within the context of an industrial thesis, enclosing a copy of the contract and the industrial thesis data form (.docx, 57 kB).
  2. If the Academic Commission approves the formalisation of the agreement, the Academic Commission coordinator will refer the request to the DOKe by writing to doke.hitzarmenak@ehu.eus, attaching the documentation referred to in the above point (completed form and copy of the contract).
  3. The DOKe draws up the agreement in accordance with the template*, with the data provided in the industrial thesis form. If the documents are not electronically signed, the DOKe issues two counterparts of the agreement (for the external entity and for the DOKe) and up to 6 counterparts of the annex (for the doctoral programme coordinator, the doctoral student, the directors, and the doctoral student's supervisor at the company). If it is electronically signed, it will be sent to all the parties by email.
  4. Once the agreement has been signed by all the parties, the administrative clerk for the programme registers the agreement and the annex in GAUR.

* If the agreement to be formalised does not correspond to the template established by the UPV/EHU, the Procedure for collaboration agreements with external entities not corresponding to the template must be followed.
