I am tenure lecturer in Animal Physiology in the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU in charge of the course Enviromental Animal Physiology in the degree of Biology. My research activity is focused on how exogenous (trophic environment, temperature, pollution) and endogenous (genetic-transcriptomic) factors affect the physiological performance, energy balance, growth and reproduction of marine bivalves. I was admitted in the laboratory of Animal physiology in the University of the Basque Country as a junior researcher, engaging later at the School of Ocean Sciences (University of North Wales; 1990-91). I defended my PhD on the digestive adaptations in bivalves submitted to changes in the diet quantity and quality in 1996. Since then, I belong to the research group of Physiological energetics of bivalve molluscs (FEMB) in the Faculty of Science and Technology. I have supervised 3 PhD projects, published 31 peer reviewed paper (571 cites) and collaborated with scientist from other research centres from Spain (ICM-CSIC Barcelona, CSIC-Vigo) and abroad, such as School of Ocean Sciences of Bangor (UK) Universidad Austral (Chile) and Cawthron Institute (New Zealand) where I spend six months as a guest worker (2014). Since 2009, the research activity of the FEMB is focused in the analysis of the physiological and genetic basis underlying the broad inter-individual differences in the growth-performance occurring in bivalve populations.
