Graduate in English Philology (2000) and PdD in Linguistics (2011; international doctorate; Special Award) at the UPV/EHU. He works at the same university since 2007 (Linguistics and Basque Studies department), at the Faculty of Arts in Vitoria-Gasteiz. His teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate studies includes: Psycholinguistics and acquisition of Basque; Basque sociolinguistics; Language contact; Discourse analysis and language didactics. He has been an invited lecturer in Germany: Christian-Albrechts-Universität (Kiel), Freie Universität (Berlin) and Goethe Universität (Frankfurt). In Switzerland: Université de Genève (Geneva) and Haute école pédagogique du canton de Vaud (Lausanne).

He is a member of the ELEBILAB research group. He has carried out two research periods at the Université de Genève (2004/2007) and has participated in 22 research projects. He has published 2 books, 24 book chapters and 14 journal papers, as well as diverse informative works. He has obtained a six-year research term.

Currently he is supervising two PhD dissertations with Itziar Idiazabal and Ane Ortega on multilingual didactics and family language policy, respectively. Apart from those two topics, he has also contributed to other research areas such as the teaching and learning of Basque in immersion settings and Basque-Spanish bilingual development in childhood. He is a member of the Unesco Chair on World Language Heritage.
