She earned MSc in Biology (1991, best student of the year) and PhD (1995) in Biochemistry from the University of the Basque Country. She went through postdoctoral training at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany) and the Centre for Biological Research (CIB, CSIC, Madrid). After a “Ramón y Cajal” contract, at present she works as a researcher and faculty member of the School for Science and Technology (FCyT) of UPV/EHU.

Her research, developed in Biofisika Institute (UPV/EHU-CSIC), is focused on the structure-function relationship of nuclear proteins involved in human pathologies. Amongst her scientific contributions, she has described at molecular level interactions regulating subcellular localization and functionality of several proteins. Nowadays, her group explores the role of the protein nucleophosmin in DNA repair, and the ability of certain compounds to rescue the native folding and localization of this protein in a type of leukaemia. She lectures on macromolecular interactions in the last year of the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Degrees. She has supervised two doctoral thesis, and several end-of degree and master projects, and has published 25 scientific articles and 3 book chapters. Based on her publications, her “h-index” is 15.
