Itziar Alkorta has a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She held a postdoctoral stay at the University of California, Berkeley and in 1996 she joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology where she is a full professor and also the Instituto Biofisika, a Joint Research Institute between the UPV/EHU and CSIC.

Since then, she has led a research group that studies the molecular mechanisms of bacterial conjugation to provide solutions to the problem of antibiotic resistance spread among bacteria.

She has supervised numerous doctoral theses, master's and degree final projects. She has written about 100 scientific and science dissemination articles and she has led and participated in numerous research projects.

She has been the Head of the Instituto Biofisika, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and member of the Board of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Since 2017, she is member of AKADEME II, a network of academic women of the UPV/EHU. Currently she is the coordinator of the Joint Research Laboratory on Environmental Antibiotic Resistance, a network of research groups that studies the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in the environment.

Dr. Alkorta teaches in Basque and English in the Degrees of Biology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, respectively. She also participates in the inter-university master's degree in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine
